School Tour of Lviv

“If you don’t know history, you have no future”. This popular aphorism reminds us of the importance of historical education. But to make the lesson memorable, one has to make the story interesting and easy for understanding, not only instructive and full of facts. This is what official educating system often lacks. So we are here to emend this. We offer you a school tour, developed in accordance with interests of pupils of different ages andcomplementing the standard school programme.

The tour begins at Taras Shevchenko’s monument on Svoboda Avenue and continues with a walk around the mediaeval city centre of Rynok Square. Here the pupils will hear about the history of our land during the reign of Ukrainian princes, Polish kings and the Austro-Hungarian Empire; find out how life of the citizens changed with different ages; and see prominent monuments of four ethnic-religious communities, which formed Lviv’s population from the Middle Ages and kept creating the image of the city till the greatest tragedy of the 20th century – WWII.

Besides that, during this tour pupils will visit the Italian Courtyard, where they will see the pranger, which marked a place for mediaeval executions. They also will hear about one of the most tragic moments in Ukrainian history, to which this house bore witness. After that the group will visit the Secret Pharmacy Museum. Here the pupils will listen to tales of traditions and mysteries of the apothecary profession and of its development in Lviv; and also have some rest.

After that the group will have a chance to see the remnants of fortifications not only from the outside but from the inside – during a visit to the Arsenal Museum. This is the biggest museum of armoury in Ukraine; numerous exponents from different countries and epochs can be seen here. In the end we offer to visit also the dungeons of the Dominican Monastery, where remnants of the ground floor of Prince Leo’s Palace are preserved. Some intriguing and exciting stories will be told here too.

This tour will be interesting for school groups from different countries not only as an acquaintance with our city, but also as a brief excursion to the history of Ukraine in the context of European history in general. The tour has to be adjusted according to the age of the group, so be sure to give us the information beforehand.
