Tour to the Lviv Castles

The Golden Horseshoe of Lviv Castles is a popular tour route in Galicia. It was designed by Borys Voznytsky, a prominent figure of Ukrainian culture – he was the director of Lviv Art Gallery for 50 years. The goal of the tour is to get acquainted with the architecture of palaces and fortifications of magnate residences in the region. It includes the Olesko, Pidhirtsi and Zolochiv Castles. The tour to the castles will be a rich experience and a possibility to know more about local culture.

The Pidhirtsi Castle belongs to the Renaissance epoch and is a brilliant example of a combination of bastion fortifications with a renaissance palace. The castle was designed by Andrea del Aqua for Stanislaw Koniecpolski. The castle is surrounded by a park in Italian style that is now the Park-Monument of Garden and Park Art of National Importance. The park wasn’t preserved in its initial state, but it still is the only one of this type in Ukraine. You’ll also have a possibility to see the ghosts of the Pidhirtsi Castle.

The renaissance ensemble of the Zolochiv Castle is the Monument of National Importance. It was built in 1634 on costs of Jakub Sobieski. The name of the architect remains unknown. The territory of the castle includes the Great and the Chinese Palaces. The castle functioned both as a residence and as a defence complex; it is an example of Dutch style of fortifications. An interesting feature of the ensemble is an ancient drainage system, well preserved, which comes from the times when even French Louvre didn’t have anything alike.

The Olesko Castle is also the Monument of National Importance. It dates back to the 13th – 18th centuries. The castle is located on a big hill, from which you may enjoy views of idyllic landscapes. The location of the castle on the margin of two ancient principalities – Galicia and Volhynia – lead to frequent battles for it and, subsequently, to frequent destructions. But the castle survived and was successfully restored – once in the 19th century and twice in the 20th.

The restoration of 1970s was accomplished thanks to Borys Voznytsky, and in 1975 the castle became the museum-preserve. Among the exponents of the museum are: Ukrainian icons, ancient unglazed rectangular tiles (12th century), portraits of Rzewuski, saved from the palace in Rozdil, etc.

The tour will be a source of vivid impressions for romantics and lovers of art and for those interested in fortifications and military history alike.
