Tour to the Zhovkva and Krekhiv

Zhovkva is a small picturesque city, second only to Lviv in the region in number of architectural monuments. A castle and a synagogue – two things lost in Lviv – are preserved here. If you want to see those and other landmarks, you should go on the “Zhovkva and Krekhiv Monastery” tour.

Zhovkva was designed as an “ideal city” of the Renaissance epoch – a combination of architecture, safety and harmonious social order. One of the most beautiful places of the city is its main Rynok square, nowadays – Vicheva sq. It is surrounded by the old houses, the Church of St. Lawrence, two city gates, the castle and the city walls.

The Church of St. Lawrence is one of the most valuable buildings in the city. Its belfry is especially popular; it is often called “the small Tower of Pisa”. A number of prominent Polish statesmen are buried in the crypt of the church; that makes it an important monument not only for Ukraine.

The Basilian Monastery is famous for its frescoes, painted by Julian Butsmaniuk in Ukrainian baroque style. The subjects of the frescoes are especially curious. For example, there is a painting of Cossacks bringing gifts to new-born Christ.

The Synagogue of Zhovkva is the world-known architectural monument. The first building on this location was erected in 1625, but soon was burned in a fire. It was rebuilt in 1698. It is now on the restoration list of the World Monuments Fund based in New York. The synagogue became a model for many others in different cities, including Tel Aviv, Israel.

The Krekhiv Monastery is an architectural monument of the 17th – 18th centuries. Monks named Joel and Sylvester are thought to be its founders; they came to live here in the caves 12 km from Zhovkva. Gradually there came more and more monks, and with the help of Stanislaw Zholkiewski the Church of St. Peter and Paul was built next to the caves. This became the base for the later monastery, surrounded by the walls in a form of irregular pentagon. The main church of the monastery is the Church of St. Nickolas, built in the 18th century. The authors were a number of well-known masters of the time, who made it an architectural masterpiece.
