Tour of Night Lviv

Let’s leave talks of history and architecture for daytime. Evening inspires us for a more romantic and poetic mood. After a fragrant cup of Lviv coffee it’s so nice to walk among the colourful city lights and hear some stories of past romances…

Lviv is a very romantic city. There was a time when it witnessed love that even death could not destroy – love of famous Polish artist ArturGrottger and young Wanda Mone. Lviv citizens preserved memory about them in a saying: “they love each other like Artur and Wanda”. It was in Lviv that a young noble woman Sofia Jablonowska met her two great loves – and thus stayed in the city’s history as “the wife of two earls”. It was to Lviv that a talented German sculptor Johann Pfister fled from his wealthy customers in Berezhany to lavishly celebrate his wedding. Even one of the Polish kings found love of his life here.

There were also more deadly passions – to mention, for example, a notorious “war for the bride” HalshkaOstrozka, whom her mother was hiding in Lviv’s Dominican Monastery. There were murders also – one passionate Florentine called UrbanoUbaldini killed his rival, who tried to court his beloved. He was sentenced to death but saved by Lviv women… But otherwise executions took place often enough, for example, a notorious death by fire of two lovers – it was no good in the Middle Ages to love someone of different Christian denomination.

But stories of love in Lviv are not only about suffering. Some of them left beautiful gifts for the city itself – like one of the oldest public parks in Ukraine, for example. Love of artist OleksaNovakivsky left us a legacy of masterpieces. There were also not so indubitable achievements – famous Lviv-born writer Leopold von Sacher-Masoch became known exactly for his extraordinary treatment of this feeling.

Lviv has so many romantic, adventurous, mysterious stories, sometimes beautiful, sometimes frightening... Lviv was a point of meeting andentangling of fates of people of different ethnic and religious origins, cultural background and ideals. But one thing united them all – it was love for the city of Lviv.
