Coffee Houses of Lviv

Lviv – “the coffee capital of Ukraine” – cannot be imagined without its numerous cafes, an integral part of its authentic atmosphere. But cafes are not just about coffee. For two centuries, it is here, in the coffee houses, that the city’s history is written.

In the 19th century Europe cafes became important centres of public life. It was here that new art movements were born, scientific discoveries were made, bonds were illegally traded, political movements were created and coups were planned. Even Lenin started his way to become “the father of the communist revolution” from cosy cafes in Switzerland, not from dirty outskirts of Saint-Petersburg.

Lviv kept up with the trends. There were coffee houses here frequented by Ukrainian and Polish artists, by Jewish writers and philosophers, Austrian bureaucrats, financiers of all kinds, here was the place of illegal gambling, here Ukrainians planned the coup d’état of 1918, here litres of coffee were transformed into mathematic theories of world significance. Even in Soviet times, when life changed radically, cafes kept some of their role. It was here that in 1980s new artistic underground started that gave rise to cultural flourishing when Ukraine gained independence.

Old traditions are still kept. Lviv Cafes are still the places, where artists gather, exhibitions, lectures and poetry readings, book presentations and jazz concerts are held; every coffee house keeps and recreates a tiny part of the city’s past.

You’ll have an opportunity to visit a couple of Lviv cafes, enjoy some good coffee, listen to the stories of the past and get a souvenir box of handmade chocolate candies. You’ll visit the coffee house that was once included into the city guides along with the High Castle Hill, you will find out how and when coffee came to Lviv, where were cafes famous writers and artists used to attend, you will hear the exciting story of Yuri Kulchytsky, see splendid windows of the former confectionery of “Lviv’s chocolate king”, places where new art is created in Lviv, and the café where functional analysis was born once upon a time. Welcome, and have some coffee with us!
