Coffee Houses of Lviv

What Lviv can’t be imagined without? Coffee, of course! Coffee is one of the symbols of the city, and your journey to Lviv should definitely include a coffee-tour and a chocolate-tour. This is the tour for those who want to know more about Lviv coffee houses; who, enjoying a cup of fragrant coffee or hot chocolate, want to hear the exciting history of the drink’s introduction into city’s life or some mysterious legends of old times. During the tour you’ll visit coffee houses that will impress you with their interiors and please you with quality of their service. You’ll have the possibility to try Turkish-style coffee and hand-made chocolate.

But to Lviv coffee came not from Turkey, but from Vienna. Yuri Kulchytsky, a Cossack from Galicia and later a merchant, opened one of the first coffee houses in Vienna in 1683. It was called “Under the Blue Bottle”. And now, to pay homage, a coffee house in Lviv bears the same name. The café carefully reproduces the atmosphere of a coffee house from late Austro-Hungarian times and will be a real visit into the city’s past. The menu, likewise, consists of dishes typical for different Austro-Hungarian provinces of that time. And, of course, here you will try the best Turkish-style coffee in the city. We also recommend you one of the specialties – coffee “Karnavatska” with lemon, honey and clove. An inn existed in this courtyard even in the 16th century, so you may meet a ghost of a visitor from the Middle Ages here. There are numerous legends and even a novel about this place.

But Lviv’s also a modern city. In The Kavalerka coffee house fans of coffee culture may try their favorite drink, made with the use of unusual technologies – Chemex, pour-over, AeroPress etc. Coffee of all tastes, most fantastic methods of making, most unique varieties you’ve ever heard of – Lviv is the coffee-capital of Ukraine. This location is one you really should visit on a coffee-tour.

The most bohemian of Lviv coffee houses is Under the Clepsydra, located in premises that belong to Dzyga Art Association on Virmenska st. Artist and musicians like to gather here. A lot of artistic events take place in the coffee shop and in The Dzyga art gallery; here is Lviv’s vanguard in contemporary art and jazz music. You can’t miss this place on a coffee-tour to our city.

Most favorite coffee house of tourists is Lviv Coffee Mining Manufacture. Here you may see the process of mining Lviv’s coffee ore with your own eyes. The Golden Ducat coffee house will offer you something that you cannot buy or sell. Sure, you may buy here a cup of coffee, but inspiration you’ll get here for free, while drinking it. This is a wonderful place for all coffee-lovers.

The Fresco café is famous for their hand-made chocolate. The name is due to the real fresco uncovered during the restoration, which now adorns the interior. This place has an amazing atmosphere, especially in summer, when you can hear street musicians from the outside. You just have to visit it!

Every one of these coffee houses became an important part of the city’s cultural image. Here you have a possibility to look at Lviv from the inside. They are not only parts of some “chocolate-tour”; they keep the spirit of the city and let you have a glimpse of its mysteries. Besides that, you will also see most famous historical monuments of the old part of the city during the tour – the Armenian Church, Rynok sq., etc. And an opportunity to have a cup of coffee in one of these cafes will be a pleasant bonus to the tour.
