Great Lviv tour

First written record about Lviv appears in the Galician-Volhynian Chronicle in 1256. The city in those days included the prince’s residence (the Low Castle), the citadel (the High Castle) and the city itself, surrounded by the walls (today Stary Rynok sq. – “Old Market square”). In 1272 Lviv became the capital of the Principality of Galicia-Volhynia instead of Holm (today Helm, Poland) by order of Prince Leo (Ukr.: Lev Danylovych). Location of the city on the crossroads of two great trade-routes made fortifications very important.

The “Fortifications of Lviv” tour consists of two parts: 1) Fortifications of the city centre; 2) Distant objects of city’s defence.

During the first part of the tour we will visit locations of former and existing fortifications in the city centre. They include the Low Castle, city walls, gates and wickets, the Royal Arsenal, the third line of defence, the Gunpowder Tower, the Hlyniany Gate, the Bernardine Monastery and the City Arsenal (see “Fortifications – short tour” for more details).

The second part of the tour includes such historical monument as the Sieniawski Arsenal, the Dominican Convent of St. Mary of Magdala, the Monastery Hospital of St. Lazarus, the Citadel, the High Castle and the Chortova Skelya (“Devil’s Cliff”) Preserve.

The Citadel of Lviv. Built in the middle of the 19th century, it is the only ensemble of fortification buildings in Ukraine that stayed nearly intact till our times. It was built in 1851-54 on a broad elevated plateau by order of Austrian authorities under supervision of General Wilhelm von Hammerstein. These fortifications and military buildings housed garrisons and artillery units.

The High Castle was one of the main Lviv defence objects of the 13th – 18th centuries. The castle was built on the hill on an elevation of 350 m above the sea level. The elevation of the hill above the surrounding land reaches 150 m in some places. The castle’s plan resembled lute in shape. Only one part of the outer wall remains today. Nowadays High Castle Park, the Park-Monument of Garden and Park Art of Regional Importance, is situated on the hill. Park (36,2 ha) is a part of the Nature Reserve Fund of Ukraine as a national legacy landmark. It consists of two terraces with a view of the city.

Perhaps the most intriguing location is the so-called Devil’s Cliff. It is a Forest Preserve of Regional Importance nowadays. Valuable beech and pine-beech forests are under protection here. But the place is famous for its archeological site with the evidence of the first human habitat in Lviv suburbs. The cliff was also one of the observation posts which served local inhabitants for guarding against Tatars. The other two were the High Castle and the so-called Bold (Ukr.: Lysa) Hill. This group of rocks is one of the favorite recreational sites for modern Lviv citizens.

The tour will be interesting and informative for all who want to know more about the history of the country and to get acquainted with local peculiarities. You’ll have a possibility to find out more about fortifications and to hear interesting stories connected with these locations.
